Naval battles in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag can get rough if you haven't upgraded your ship. During the mission The Trust, you have to track down and board a massive Royal African Company vessel.

If you do not have hull or weapon upgrades for the Jackdaw, this fight feels completely unfair. The easiest fix is to exit the memory, farm some Reales, and buy upgrades. But if you lack the coins or just want to finish it right now, you can use a specific sailing trick. Here is how it works.

Avoiding the Fort and the Fleet

When the checkpoint starts, steer your ship hard to the right immediately. Do not sail straight ahead or veer to the left.

There is a hostile Fort on the far left side of the map. If you get too close, the fort will rain mortar fire down on you in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

You do not want to fight a fortress and a fleet at the same time. Making a sharp right turn lets you separate the main boss ship from the rest of the pack and avoids early ramming attacks.

Using the Boss Ship as a Shield

Once you pull the main Royal African Company ship away from the fort and the smaller scout ships, make a left turn to get side-by-side with it. The big ship rarely tries to ram you. It is the smaller, faster boats you need to worry about in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Position your boat so the massive enemy ship sits right between you and the rest of the fleet. The boss ship acts as a physical blockade. The smaller boats will not be able to get a clean angle to shoot or ram you, turning a chaotic chaotic battle into a simple one-on-one fight.

Matching Pace and Boarding

To keep this shield active, you must match the speed of the enemy vessel. When the ship slows down, tap the sail button to drop your sails completely. This acts like an emergency brake. Tap the sail button again to speed back up in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

While pacing the enemy, bombard their hull with broadside cannons. The side guns deal far more damage than your front cannons. Keep firing the instant your weapons reload.

As soon as the enemy health bar drops to zero, sail close and hold the prompt to start boarding. Do this quickly before the other ships catch up.

Once the boarding sequence starts, use the Swivel Gun on the Jackdaw deck to pick off enemy crew members from a distance. Then, jump over and board the Royal African Company Ship, clear out the remaining sailors, and the mission is complete in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

FAQ

Q. How do I escape the fight if my ship keeps sinking?

A. Pause the game and select "Reload". This will put you back out on the open sea, before the battle begins, allowing you to sail away and upgrade the Jackdaw.

Q. Which weapons work best against this particular ship?

A. Since you are sailing right next to it, heavy shot broadside cannons will tear through its armor quickest in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Q. Can I use mortars in this mission?

A. Yes, if you purchased the mortar upgrade, you can soften up the hull before you make your close-range approach.
