Nintendo May Have More Big Remakes Planned Beyond Ocarina of Time

Majora's Mask could be next in line, while a separate 2028 remake may bring another classic Nintendo franchise back.

Nintendo appears to be making ambitious remakes a bigger part of its release strategy, and the recently released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake could be just the beginning. The game is now out on Switch 2, and fans have started to spot details that could hint at a future Majora's Mask remake. But Nintendo may have even more projects in the works than just Zelda.

In a recent interview, Nintendo's senior vice president of product development and publishing, Nate Bihldorff, said remakes and new games are just as important to the company. While fans love seeing new entries in their favorite franchises, he said there's an appeal to revisiting the classics. He added that Ocarina of Time will be a whole new experience for players who never got to play the original back in 2026.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Remake Information

These comments suggest that Nintendo is looking to strike a balance between new releases and ambitious remakes, rather than treating them as sporadic projects. It feels like a natural progression, especially considering the company has revisited franchises like Star Fox, Mario 64 and Luigi's Mansion multiple times, bringing back older classics with modern technology.

A couple of signs also point to a possible Majora's Mask remake.

A good example is the Happy Mask Salesman, whose updated look in Ocarina of Time has been noticed. His more sinister design, sunken eyes, and extra shadows give him a look that feels more in line with his role in Majora's Mask. While he is only a side character in Ocarina of Time, he becomes a major antagonist in its sequel after taking possession of Majora's Mask. This change could be intentional foreshadowing of another remake.

Nintendo also has a practical reason to revisit Majora's Mask. Since it comes right after Ocarina of Time, the development team could reuse many assets and technical foundations already built for the current remake. The project involved several internal and external development teams, including Monolith Soft and Bandai Namco, suggesting Nintendo may have established a structure that lets it work on multiple remakes without pulling the entire Zelda team away from its next major project.

Another possible hint came during Nintendo's 40th anniversary Direct, where the UK version featured a different version of the Majora's Mask logo. This might have been an accidental appearance of an asset related to a project already in development for Switch 2.

Another insider known as Special Nick has also claimed that Nintendo has another remake planned for 2028. Earlier, he hinted at a possible remake when he discussed Nintendo's plans after Ocarina of Time and Star Fox. But Bihldorff recently drew attention again to his earlier statement, following his recent comments, suggesting that another major project is still on the way.

A 2028 release could certainly be Majora's Mask, although the development timeline makes that possibility somewhat uncertain.

The original Majora's Mask followed Ocarina of Time just two years later, but modern development takes considerably longer. Even Majora's Mask 3D arrived four years after Ocarina of Time 3D. Considering that development on the current remake reportedly began around the time Tears of the Kingdom was completed, a similar turnaround may be difficult.

Donkey Kong 64 Remake from Nintendo

Another possibility is that Nintendo is preparing a different remake for 2028, potentially involving Donkey Kong.

A Donkey Kong Country remake is one option, although a completely new entry might make more sense. With a possible Donkey Kong movie also expected around that time, Nintendo could aim to release a new game close to the film's arrival, similar to its current plans for Zelda.

Alternatively, Nintendo could consider remaking Donkey Kong 64. Following the success of Donkey Kong Bananza, Nintendo might want to revisit another 3D entry in the franchise. A contemporary Donkey Kong 64 would provide players with a chance to revisit the series' earlier 3D adventures.

For now, Majora's Mask is the leading candidate, but Nintendo's comments hint that its remaking plans could go far beyond Zelda. And whether that 2028 project is another Zelda adventure or a return to Donkey Kong, Switch 2 owners may have several classic Nintendo experiences to look forward to.
