A guide on how to get Mega Gengar and Gengarite in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Game Guide by Groot on Oct 22, 2025
You will once again look for important stones in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Each stone has its own use. Mega Stones are a feature that is very important to this game. They are found next to the famous evolution stones.
Once you’ve chosen your starter Pokémon, your next step is to begin your journey to complete your Pokédex. One of the returning Pokémon from earlier generations is Gengar, which can undergo Mega Evolution using the Gengarite.

You’ll need to progress through the story before encountering one, but obtaining it afterward becomes a straightforward process.
How to Obtain Gengar
You can obtain Gengar by evolving Gastly and Haunter through the traditional method or by catching one later in the story. To start, locate Gastly in Wild Zone 4, an area you’ll access early in the game.
This Wild Zone is positioned on the northern side of Lumiose City. After capturing a Gastly, level it up until it evolves into Haunter once it reaches Level 25.
If your Gastly already exceeds Level 25, simply level it up again to trigger the evolution sequence through the party menu.

To evolve Haunter into Gengar, you will need to trade it with another player. Once traded, it will evolve and can then be traded back to you. Alternatively, if you receive a Haunter as a gift from another player, it will automatically evolve into Gengar once obtained.
How to Get Gengar Without Trading
If you prefer not to trade, you can still acquire Gengar later in the main storyline. Around Main Mission 20, during the “A Request From The Rust Syndicate” questline, you will encounter a Gengar that appears in a “rundown old building.”
This event takes place during the D-rank section of the story when opposing Pokémon reach approximately Level 42. You can catch Gengar directly at this point, allowing you to skip the trading process entirely.

Where to Find Gengarite
Mega Gengar can only be reached with the Gengarite, which can be bought at the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue. If you've played Pokémon X and Y, you may recognize this shop because it sells the same thing: special stones that can change Pokémon.
While Pokémon Legends: Z-A contains a variety of hidden features and numerous Mega Evolutions, most of the adventure takes place within Lumiose City, making it easier to navigate and locate essential items like the Gengarite compared to larger regional maps.
Once obtained, the Gengarite will allow you to trigger Mega Evolution for Gengar, completing the process and unlocking its full power.
