Tales of Arise Guide | How to Beat Grigere

Here's a guide on how to beat Grigere in Tales of Arise.

Game Guide by Imdeadfrfr on  Jun 03, 2026

The revolutionary journey leads your party further into the fractured, politically turbulent territory of Mahag Saar, where the threats shift from feral zeugles to highly trained military opposition. You will be stopped dead in your tracks violently as you pass through the heavily patrolled shipping lanes and industrial areas of the Hidden Wharf. Grigere, a heavily armored Renan commander, stands in your way and acts as a huge tactical gatekeeper in this chapter of the story.

This particular boss fight is a big return to humanoid dueling mechanics, but with a much greater focus on blocking, structural defense and heavy counter-attacks. Grigere isn’t about rapid magical warps or erratic flying tricks to catch you off-guard. Instead, he uses a giant tower shield, tough physical armor, and a huge mace to totally shut down your party’s normal offensive rhythm.

In this guide, we will break down the necessary preparations and tactical maneuvers to breach this iron defense and secure the wharf.

Essential Preparations and Gear Tweaks

Run straight at a heavily armored military commander without checking your character equipment thoroughly, and your party is going to get wiped out in a hurry. Before you start this fight, make a quick detour to the local merchant hub or a nearby campfire to optimize your party loadout as much as possible. Alphen’s newly available weapon upgrades for this specific zone are highly recommended to be forged; you will need the highest possible raw physical attack power to pierce through the boss’s heavy armor.

Your active four-person roster for this encounter should be Alphen, Shionne, Rinwell and Law. Grigere uses a mix of earth-elemental attacks and heavy physical crushing attacks, so setting up your party’s defensive accessories is key to mitigating damage. Create and equip Protect Rings or Earth-resistance accessories for your frontline fighters to form a strong natural defense against the commander's high-impact arsenal.

You also need to heavily restock on important healing consumables before you trigger the fight. Stock up on a good supply of Apple Gels and Treat Gels for a full health recovery and plenty of Orange Gels to keep your shared Cure Points pool topped up. Keeping a few Life Bottles around is also a great insurance policy in case a rogue overhead mace slam suddenly takes a character out.

Tweaking the Party AI for Balanced Support

It’s important to set the proper behavioral parameters for your AI companions so they don’t get overwhelmed easily by Grigere’s wide sweeping shield bashes and quick forward rushes. In this battle, you’ll want to directly control Alphen and use his high-impact sword moves to immediately attract the attention of the boss. Pause the game and open the Strategy menu to reset your backline logic before starting the encounter.

Shionne needs to be ordered without any wiggle room to concentrate solely on healing and saving resources. Set her to auto-cast First Aid or use any status healing items immediately when a character's health bar hits a dangerously low level. Rinwell should be told to stay as far away from the main fighting area as possible, and to keep chanting her long-range elemental spells to deal safe, consistent chip damage from a distance.

Set Law as an aggressive secondary physical attacker to help Alphen maintain constant pressure on the boss’s heavy guard. Keeping your supporting spellcasters safe along the outer edges of the arena can reduce the risk of your whole team getting swept up in a single radial shield strike. That division of labor means you can comfortably concentrate on dealing with the immediate physical threats in front of you.

Phase 1 and Shield Block Mechanics

As the battle starts, you’ll immediately notice that attacking Grigere’s main body can be very difficult because of his defensive stance. The commander relies heavily on his giant tower shield, which he keeps firmly planted between himself and your front line. He is actively bracing behind this shield and gets absolute hyper-armor. He takes virtually zero damage from all standard physical attacks.

Your objective is to break through his defenses, and that means you must avoid wasting your active artes on his front shield face for the first few minutes of the fight. Instead, assume a patient defensive posture and watch his body movements carefully. When you see Grigere pull his mace back or shift his weight forward, he is bracing himself for a heavy forward thrust or a wide sweeping strike across the stone floor.

If you dodge roll at the right time, you’ll do a Perfect Evade, which will slow time around you for a moment. Immediately follow up with a Counter Edge to inflict guaranteed critical damage right into his exposed flank or rear side. This cycle of defensive waiting and immediate counter-striking is the safest way to slowly grind down his health bar in the opening phase.

Law's Armor Break Boost Attack Activated

As you continue to trade blows with the armored commander, your party members’ Boost Gauges will slowly fill up to a bright blue glow in the bottom corner of your interface. Properly managing these companion assists is the absolute key to completely disabling Grigere’s shield defenses and forcing open very generous damage windows. Law’s special Boost Attack is basically your best weapon in this very battle.

His fast armored fist strikes are specifically made to break the hard shells, heavy armor, and physical guards of very tough enemies. When you see Grigere plant his tower shield in the ground to completely block your incoming attacks, immediately activate Law's Boost Attack. His powerful combo will hit the defensive stance hard, shatter the commander's guard entirely, and instantly put them in a Core Break state.

This causes the boss to lose balance and fall helplessly to the ground, totally immobile for a long time. Tell Alphen to close the distance and use his strongest Flaming Edge techniques while he is fully downed. You want to sacrifice a little of your own health to fuel these fiery strikes, and the more you can do this, the more damage output overall you'll be pumping out while the boss is completely helpless.

Phase Two Over Limit Fury Management

Once you get Grigere's health pool down to under the halfway mark, a short animation will play, and his fighting style will become much more aggressive. The commander will snarl determinedly and surround himself with a blue aura of fire, signifying that he has officially entered his Over Limit state. His physical stats are massively boosted in this chaotic second half of the fight, and he will start using high-speed charging attacks aggressively.

He’ll frequently slam his shield forward and barrel across the arena like a runaway train, demolishing anything directly in his path. Trying to trade hits with the boss or interrupt his animations in this state is a very risky gamble that can lead to an instant party wipe. When the blue aura is up, you should immediately cast away all offensive thoughts and play in an all-defensive manner.

Just concentrate on making big, clean circles outside the arena, sprinting and dodge rolling at the right times to avoid his tracking patterns. Keep an incredibly close eye on your shared Cure Points gauge, manually pausing the game to use items from your inventory if Shionne needs immediate help keeping the party functional. Just focus on pure survival and wait patiently for the Over Limit aura to naturally dissipate.

Carrying Out the Final Strike

When the grueling Over Limit assault finally lets up, Grigere will be very tired and very vulnerable to your last attack as he takes a moment to regain his stamina. This is your last chance to strike while he's tired and snatch up the hard-won victory. Combine Alphen's fiery sword strikes with any remaining companion Boost Gauges to trap the weakened commander in a continuous, unbreakable stagger loop.

The blue crosshair diamond floating directly above the boss will fill to full capacity very quickly as your entire party continues to dump their most powerful physical and magical resources into his fragile body. When your screen displays the Strike indicator flashing violently, press the directional pad prompt that pops up to perform a cinematic team-up finisher move. This is a stunning finishing blow that will break his defense forever and end the fight.

Grigere is a huge milestone in which you have completely mastered armor-breaking, spacing discipline, and companion coordination under extreme pressure. The iron bastion of the Hidden Wharf has been cleared, and the way through Mahag Saar will finally be open. Your battle-scarred party can safely gather their loot, rest at the nearest campfire, and prepare for the even greater challenges that await your rebellion in the deeper regions of the world.
