STAR WARS: Galactic Racer Guide | How to Upgrade Abilities

Here’s a guide on how to upgrade abilities in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

Winning races in Star Wars: Galactic Racer takes more than clean driving lines. Other racers will constantly ram you, fire bolts, and try to knock you out of contention.

That is where abilities come in. Equipping the right offensive tools lets you break up the pack ahead of you, while defensive gear keeps your vehicle in one piece. Every skill starts at baseline performance, but upgrading them makes a massive difference on the track.

Here is how the upgrade loop works and what each upgraded tier does.

Upgrade Abilities

You get new abilities and higher tiers through Ability Packs.

The main way to pick them up is by visiting Hibi's Shop, which you can find located on a planet between events. Each pack costs 2,500 Credits. You can also earn packs as race rewards during certain events in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

When you first open a pack, it gives you the base version of a skill. Once you own that base version, the drop pool adjusts. Future packs will start offering upgraded variants of that specific skill instead of the starter version.

When you pick an upgraded variant from a pack, it immediately replaces the old version in your inventory and slots straight into your vehicle setup.

STAR WARS: Galactic Racer Upgrade Menu

Concussion Mine (Mine Upgrades)

The standard Concussion Mine leaves behind a single explosive trap that detonates when an opponent gets close. It hits them with Concussed and System Malfunction.

Upgrading to Concussion Mine II drops two proximity traps that trigger both negative effects on nearby targets. Concussion Mine III increases this payload further by laying down three separate charges in your wake in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

For elemental crowd control, Freezing Concussion Mine leaves a trap that inflicts Concussed, triggers System Malfunction, and coats the track in a lingering Frozen cloud.

Freezing Concussion Mine II keeps that lingering ice hazard, but it also restores 1 Energy for every rival you catch in the blast.

Vent (Heat Management Upgrades)

Firing your standard Vent purges built-up heat from your Ramjet and grants the Cooled state.

Upgrading to Vent II clears your engine heat and keeps that Cooled buff active for a longer stretch of time in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

If you want a hands-off option, Auto-Vent gives you the extended duration of the second tier while triggering on its own the moment your heat gauge hits the edge of the Redlining threshold.

Alternative paths focus on side effects. Supercooled Vent clears engine heat and applies Cooled, but it gradually builds up Frozen on your own ship until the vent shuts off once you freeze solid.

Offensively, Flame Vent vents heat while inflicting Burning and System Malfunction on rivals trailing near your exhaust, while Corrosive Vent inflicts the Corroded status on nearby opponents.

Shockwave (Crowd Control Upgrades)

The base Shockwave shoves close rivals away from your chassis and hits them with System Malfunction.

If you want momentum, Vectored Shockwave pushes other racers back while giving your own ship a forward shove. Vectored Shockwave II amplifies this effect by launching your ship forward with significantly more force.

Control builds can opt for Magnetic Shockwave, which drags nearby vehicles right next to you before detonating and blowing them away. Taking that to Magnetic Shockwave II pulls rivals in, blasts them outward, and applies both Concussed and System Malfunction in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

Status Scrubber (Cleanse Upgrades)

Using your standard Status Scrubber removes any negative status effects on your ship and refunds 1 Energy if it successfully clears a debuff.

For automatic defense, Auto-Scrubber triggers on its own without spending Energy whenever you suffer System Malfunction. Auto-Scrubber II takes safety further by firing automatically whenever you gain any negative status effect while refunding 2 Energy.

If you prefer manual control with bigger resource gains, Multi-Scrubber refunds 3 Energy when you clear a status effect, while Multi-Scrubber II refunds 4 Energy upon removing any debuff.

Ion Bolt (Targeting Upgrades)

The starter Ion Bolt seeks out the closest rival in front of you and triggers Disrupted.

To pin opponents down, Concussive Bolt applies both Disrupted and Concussed to the nearest ship. Concussive Bolt II maintains that combination while keeping the target Concussed for an extended duration in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

For multi-target offense, Multi-Bolt fires tracking projectiles at up to five nearby racers, inflicting Disrupted on all targets hit. Upgrading to Multi-Bolt II strikes up to five rivals with Disrupted and grants your vehicle Surging for 5 seconds per target hit.

Ion Blast (Crash Recovery Upgrades)

This is a crash-triggered skill. When you wreck, the base Ion Blast fires an impulse that applies Disrupted to nearby rivals. Once your ship resets onto the track, you get a substantial Speed boost for every rival tagged.

Different variants alter your recovery perks. Cooling Blast gives you the Cooled buff for 10 seconds alongside a moderate Speed boost per tagged target after resetting in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

Charging Blast grants Overcharged, refunds 2 Energy per hit rival, and grants a moderate speed increase. Finally, Shielding Blast applies Shielded for 10 seconds alongside a moderate speed boost for each affected rival.

Shield (Defensive Barrier Upgrades)

Activating your standard Shield grants the Shielded status for 10 seconds to protect against incoming damage.

For momentum, Surging Shield grants Shielded for 10 seconds and turns incoming hits into 5 seconds of Surging. Surging Shield II improves this by keeping the barrier up permanently until broken by damage, while still granting 5 seconds of Surging upon impact.

Aggressive drivers can take Impact Shield, which grants protection for 10 seconds and causes collisions to inflict System Malfunction on opponents. Impact Shield II keeps that offensive collision debuff and actually extends your barrier duration whenever you crash into rivals.

Autopilot (Flight Assist Upgrades)

The standard Autopilot flies your ship along the track for 10 seconds and cuts down your Ramjet heat build-up while running in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

Energy-focused setups use Overcharged Autopilot, which extends flight control to 20 seconds and gives your ship the Overcharged state.

Overcharged Autopilot II keeps that 20-second flight time with Overcharged while adding 5 seconds to the duration whenever you trigger another ability.

Pace-focused setups use Surging Autopilot, which flies your vehicle for 15 seconds while granting the Surging state. Surging Autopilot II matches that 15-second flight duration while combining Surging with a massive Speed increase.

Surge (Speed Boost Upgrades)

Hitting your standard Surge gives you the Surging state for 10 seconds. Passing other racers extends the clock, but bumping into anything cancels the effect early.

The passing branch begins with Overtaking Surge, which grants 10 seconds of Surging and makes passing rivals extend the timer while increasing speed potency, though contact still breaks it.

Overtaking Surge II pushes the base duration to 20 seconds with those same overtaking bonuses, keeping the collision vulnerability intact.

The combat branch takes a different route. Impact Surge grants 10 seconds of Surging, but overtakes, Takedowns, and ship collisions add time to the meter rather than canceling it.

Upgrading to Impact Surge II keeps those collision and pass extensions while ensuring every scored Takedown restores vehicle Energy in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer.

FAQ

Q. Can I keep lower-tier abilities after picking an upgrade?

A. No. Once you choose an upgraded version from an Ability Pack, it replaces the earlier version in your ship's inventory and active equip slot.

Q. What is the fastest way to get Credits for Ability Packs?

A. Focus on winning planet circuit events and completing bonus race challenges. Every pack at Hibi's Shop costs 2,500 Credits, so clearing multiple events in a row is the most consistent way to build a bankroll.

Q. Does Auto-Vent hurt my vehicle's top speed?

A. No. It only vents your engines when your Ramjet reaches the limit of the Redlining zone, which prevents your engine from overheating and stalling out during a sprint.
