In SAND: Raiders of Sophie, Alloy Steel is not a huge investment in your Tech Tree, as the upgrades that require it only require small amounts. However, it is not a random loot item, and it is a bit more difficult to obtain.

The Reliable Source

Alloy Steel can be found in loot containers at times, but this is not a reliable source. It is farmed consistently by killing the robotic NPCs called Ironclads, which guard key locations.

Finding an Ironclad

As you approach, find a watchtower with a flashing red beacon in a named location, such as an island town. Once you're in range, an eye icon paired with a detection meter shows up on your screen. When that meter fills up completely, one or more Ironclads deploy around your Trampler. Get ready before that happens, since Ironclads hit hard if you're not prepared for the fight.

Collecting the Reward

Once you've taken down an Ironclad, look around the wreckage for the cargo crate it drops. These crates almost always hold Alloy Steel, usually one piece per Ironclad killed. If you need more, simply go to another named location with an Ironclad beacon and repeat the fight.

Recovering Between Fights

When you're in an Ironclad battle, your Trampler is going to be pretty beat up, so fix it up before you go into another battle. These are also places that other players like to go, so be aware of your surroundings when farming, as someone else may try to jump you mid-fight.
